Privacy Policy

Effective Date: June 7, 2026 Last Updated: October 4, 2026

Banter ("we," "our," or "us") operates the Banter mobile application (the "App"). This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights with respect to that information.

By using the App, you agree to the collection and use of information as described in this policy.

1. Information We Collect

1.1 Information You Provide

1.2 Information Collected Automatically

1.3 Information From Third Parties

2. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

We do not sell your personal information to third parties.

3. Data Retention

Data Type Retention Period
Chat messages Deleted with their game room once no message has been posted in that room for 90 days; deletion normally completes within a day after that. Within the App, a room shows only its most recent messages. Deleting your account removes your messages sooner (see below).
User account data Until you delete your account
Avatars Until you delete your account or replace the image
Moderation logs (bans, kicks, reports) Up to 2 years for safety purposes
Crash/error logs 90 days
Push notification tokens Until you delete your account or revoke notification permission

When you delete your account, we delete your profile, avatar, push tokens, and associated data within 30 days, except where retention is required by law or for safety enforcement. Moderation records tied to a ban may be retained for the period above to enforce it.

4. Third-Party Services

The App integrates the following third-party services, each with its own privacy policy:

OpenAI Automated content moderation openai.com/policies/privacy-policy
Sentry Crash and error reporting sentry.io/privacy

Message content that is flagged for moderation review may be sent to OpenAI's API for analysis. We do not send your name, email, or any account identifiers to OpenAI — only the raw message text.

5. Content Moderation

We use a combination of automated and human moderation:

6. Children's Privacy

The App is not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 17, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 as defined by COPPA. If you believe someone under 17 has provided us with personal information, contact us at privacy@banter.cx and we will delete it promptly.

7. Your Rights (All Users)

Regardless of where you are located, you can:

8. Your Rights (EU / EEA Users — GDPR)

If you are located in the European Union or European Economic Area, you have the following additional rights under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR):

Legal Bases for Processing (GDPR Article 6):

To exercise these rights, contact us at privacy@banter.cx. We will respond within 45 days.

10. Security

We implement industry-standard security measures including:

No method of electronic transmission or storage is 100% secure. While we take reasonable precautions, we cannot guarantee absolute security.

11. Anonymous Use

You may use the App without registering. Anonymous users are assigned a randomly generated handle and authenticated via Firebase Anonymous Auth. Anonymous accounts are subject to the same content moderation and rate-limiting rules as registered users. An anonymous account is identified by an ID held on your device and has a profile record (the generated handle), an online-presence record, room memberships, and any messages you send. Messages and room memberships are deleted with their game room on the schedule described in Section 3, the same as for any other user. The profile and presence records are not deleted automatically: if you delete the App without registering, you can no longer access the account, and those records remain until you ask us to delete them. To do so, contact us at privacy@banter.cx with the handle you were assigned. Moderation records relating to an anonymous account are retained as described in Section 3.

12. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Last Updated" date at the top. Continued use of the App after any change constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
